A few months ago I was searching Paperback Swap for Jane Austen books and I came across Jane and the Unpleasantness at Scargrave Manor (by Stephanie Barron – 9780553101966 – Bantam). It looked interesting, so I ordered it. It arrived about a week and a half later. I sat down and started it right away and finished it that same night. Barron is very good at utilizing the same phrases and style as Austen without overusing it. A lot of “fan fiction” books, try WAY too hard and end up just making the book cheesy and bad. The only part of the book that I didn’t care for was the Scooby-Doo-esque unmasking of the villain in a VERY “I’d have gotten away with it if not for you meddling kids” sort of way. I did like this title though so I decided to try out a few more. I went back to PBS and managed to find a few of the other books in the series. I have also been lucky enough to come across a couple at local thrift stores, bringing my total to eight books out of the set. Hopefully, she keeps writing them because they are fun, light, quick reads and I enjoy them. These would be awesome for a young girl who has already finished all of Austen’s novels and is wanting more to read.
